About Tesla Powerwall
Tesla Powerwall is a home battery system designed for backup power and day-to-day energy storage. It works with new solar systems, existing solar setups or as a standalone battery on a standard supply. Powerwall is known for strong backup performance, clean installation and an app that makes managing your energy straightforward.
Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3
Powerwall 2
Powerwall 2 stores 13.5 kWh of usable energy and is AC-coupled, which makes it ideal for retrofitting to older solar systems. It can back up the whole home or selected circuits when paired with the Tesla Backup Gateway. Because it is AC-coupled, it works with any brand of inverter.
Powerwall 3
Powerwall 3 also stores 13.5 kWh but includes a built-in hybrid inverter and can take DC solar input directly. This makes it a strong choice for new solar installs. It offers higher output than Powerwall 2, making it better suited to homes with heat pumps or other heavy loads. Multiple units can be linked for greater storage and power.
Tesla Backup Gateway
The Gateway manages grid connection, export control and backup switching. When the grid goes down, it keeps your home powered within a second, either for the whole property or for selected circuits depending on how the system is designed.
Powerwall with solar
Powerwall works with almost any solar setup. Powerwall 2 can be added to existing systems without touching the roof or inverter, while Powerwall 3 can take solar input directly for a cleaner all-in-one installation. Both systems can charge from off-peak EV tariffs, helping lower running costs and reduce reliance on the grid.
Why Powerwall suits local homes
Power cuts remain common in rural parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, making Powerwall’s backup capability a practical benefit.
Many homes already have older solar systems that pair well with Powerwall 2, and newer homes or planned solar upgrades are well served by Powerwall 3’s higher output and integrated inverter. Time-based charging also works well alongside popular EV tariffs in the region.

Frequently asked questions...
If you’re considering a Tesla Powerwall installation in Norwich, Norfolk or Suffolk, contact Redhill Services to arrange a survey and a clear, no-pressure quotation.
Can Powerwall be fitted to my existing solar system?
Yes. Powerwall 2 is AC-coupled and works with almost any existing inverter. We will check your setup during the survey.
Do I need Powerwall 2 or Powerwall 3?
Powerwall 2 suits retrofits and existing solar systems. Powerwall 3 suits new installs or homes with higher loads. We can advise which fits your property.
Will Powerwall run my home during a power cut?
With the Tesla Backup Gateway installed, Powerwall can power the whole home or selected circuits. We will design the backup setup properly during the survey.
Can Powerwall charge from off-peak tariffs?
Yes. Powerwall can charge overnight on cheaper energy rates and discharge during peak periods. This works well with common EV tariffs.
How many Powerwalls do I need?
That depends on your usage, backup needs and property size. Most homes start with a single unit, but larger homes may need two or more.
Can Powerwall support heat pumps?
Powerwall 3’s higher output makes it better suited to homes running heat pumps or appliances with high starting loads.
Do I need a Gateway for backup?
Yes. The Tesla Backup Gateway handles safe isolation and automatic switching. Without it, the system cannot provide backup power.
Do you support older Powerwall systems?
Yes. We can carry out checks, system tweaks and fault finding on existing Powerwall installs.
